Summary

Provides technical assistance in the development and implementation of monitoring and evaluation systems, develops capacity among affiliate partners in program monitoring and evaluation management, and promotes networking with program stakeholders

Responsibilities:
  • Support the development and implementation of all elements of M&E, knowledge management and learning; i.e., program design, management of monitoring and evaluation processes, data management, knowledge management, reflection and learning for effective and high quality impact programs
  • Provide guidance and support to action research and impact assessment initiatives to develop relevant research and impact assessment protocols, frameworks and processes
  • Lead the process of information collection and sharing, identification of issues and bottlenecks in program development for appropriate action
  • Design baseline study tools and support National Offices in conducting such studies for the identification of critical drivers that define the well being of children and youth.
  • Establish and build a Regional Network of M&E for sharing learning, technical support and advancement of effective M&E practices
  • Provide guidance on the development and use of tools and methods for planning, monitoring, evaluation, and impact assessment.
  • Support implementation of frameworks, policies, procedures and standards
  • Strengthen the organizational culture of learning by contributing to development of Learning Framework and laying foundations of its implementation.
  • Document and disseminate lessons learned from life-stage models and approaches
Required:
  • Bachelor degree with 7 years of experience in international development, social policy or similar discipline.
  • Experience of designing and carrying out research and evaluation work in a variety of settings, including participatory approaches to assessment impact of development projects
  • Experience of training, presentation, facilitation and capacity building activities in relation to monitoring, evaluation and planning of project work, and developing materials to do this
  • Highly developed analytical skills and the ability to assimilate and process information on a wide range of issues
  • Highly developed communication skills, written and verbal, to influence other professionals and to produce high quality written materials (evaluation, research or policy documents) for a variety of audiences
  • Creative mind and ability to work on own initiative, adhere to deadlines and to work in complex projects with multi-cultural teams

Background:

Fairtrade Africa (FTA) is the umbrella organisation representing Fairtrade certified producers in Africa. 

FTA aims to effectively represent producers within the International Fairtrade system and to contribute to livelihood improvement of African producers by increasing access to markets. 

Established in 2005, the FTA directs policy and strategic development of the organisation. 

FTA has four (4) regional networks - Eastern, Southern, West and North Africa supporting producer activities.

Job Purpose And Reporting:

As the Regional Manager, you will play a key role in setting up local and regional activities for Fairtrade Africa and have overall responsibility for coordination of activities in Eastern Africa including producer support and consultation.

Specific Tasks
  • Support the regional board in realizing the vision of the Eastern Africa region. 
  • Support the FTA management in providing leadership for the region. 
  • Lead regional strategy and project development and implementation. 
  • Actively engage in preparing annual work plans, annual reporting and local / regional coordination of activities according to the plans. 
  • Effectively coordinate regional grassroots structures such as country and product networks, plan, coordinate and report on programme and project activities in line with Fairtrade Africa
    vision. 
  • Initiate & manage local and regional activities in close alignment with Fairtrade Africa, the regional board and country networks. 
  • Lead the development of annual work plans and specific plans for developing Fairtrade activities in the region. 
  • Drive sustainability of regional plans through partnerships and resource mobilisation. 
  • Develop and maintain regional network of partners to facilitate and support the regional
    strategy. 
  • Ensure efficient financial and management systems are in place at the regional level. 
  • Facilitate country and product partnerships to increase access for producers. 
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with producers. 
  • Promote greater producer participation in Fairtrade. 
  • Represent Eastern Africa Network whenever as may be required.
Knowledge and Experience Required for the Job in Kenya
  • Experience in developing and supporting ethical and sustainable supply chains; 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to operate successfully in an environment with multiple stakeholders and people from different cultures; 
  • Knowledge of inclusive development and sustainable pro-poor business initiatives; 
  • Relevant Master’s degree in either Agriculture, development studies, Economics, Business,
    Rural development or social sciences; 
  • Proven experience with managing regional projects and budgets;
  • Analytical and financial skills; 
  • Excellent communication, writing and presentation skills in English and Kiswahili; 
  • Available for frequent travelling, mostly in the Eastern Africa region;

The Position: 

The BecA-ILRI Hub seeks to recruit a Crop Molecular Breeder whose focus will be the development and/or validation and application of marker-assisted germplasm enhancement with a focus on major constraints of importance in African agriculture. 

This includes genetic mapping, marker validation, MAS implementation using high-throughput genotyping systems plus training and technical backstopping of NARS partners in the region. 

This is an international appointment reporting to the BecA-ILRI Hub Director.

Essential Skills and Qualifications will include

  • Ph.D. degree in plant genetics, molecular biology and/or plant breeding 
  • Familiarity with large-scale germplasm collections and field breeding programs and a strong background in quantitative genetics Experience in high throughput genotyping system

ACTED launched its Kenya mission in January of 2008 with an emergency assistance program for residents in Nairobi slums affected by the post election violence. 

Since 2009, Nairobi has been the home base of ACTED’s relief operation in Southern Somalia aimed at supporting vulnerable famers affected by recurrent droughts. 

In 2010, ACTED’s mission in Kenya/Somalia sought to address the needs of pastoralist and farmer communities of North Central Kenya and South Somalia arising from multiple shocks such as adverse climatic conditions and disease outbreaks, through emergency food and non-food items distribution. 

In the wake of this emergency context, ACTED also promoted the adoption of sustainable community-based solutions, emphasizing livelihood strengthening and diversification, natural resource rehabilitation and management, good hygiene practices and access to sanitation facilities. 

ACTED is developing its programs in South Somalia, focusing on building capacity to respond to emergency outbreaks, as well as ensuring local populations are integrated into longer term projects aiming at improving their livelihoods. 

This will occur in the form of food, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and livelihood support to vulnerable agro-pastoral and riverine communities.

The core objective of the two-year WASH program is to assist the Kenyan government and drought-prone communities to increase resilience to drought and flash floods while increasing access to improved water supply and sanitation services, and improving hygiene for poor and vulnerable populations in the arid counties of Turkana, Marsabit (including Moyale District), Garissa, Isiolo, and Wajir in Kenya.

Position Summary

The Chief of Party will assume the leadership role within this WASH Program. S/he will be responsible for overall strategic leadership and oversight of the project and will ensure timely and efficient delivery of project’s results. 

S/he will be responsible for designing and sequencing activities, ensuring sound technical implementation, overseeing monitoring and evaluation, coordinating with key partners, engaging stakeholders, managing human and financial resources and donor reporting.

The COP WASH for this Program is responsible for leading and managing an experienced team focusing on these key objectives: 
  • Increase water storage capacity in arid lands, through improving natural and artificial storage. 
  • Improve WASH conditions at health facilities and nutrition centers frequently utilized during emergency response. 
  • Improve access to safe drinking water sources, improve access to and usage of point of use water treatment products, promote good hygiene behaviors and use of sanitation facilities as a means of reducing diarrheal disease in areas with recurrent emergency levels of malnutrition and around areas of improved water storage.
Specific Roles And Responsibilities
  • Provide overall strategic and programmatic leadership and oversight within the consortium of project partners; 
  • Ensure that project activities are meeting client and stakeholder expectations and that project results are pro-actively disseminated; 
  • Work closely with the USAID, Government of Kenya, and other critical counterparts, to provide oversight of all project operations and reporting, ensuring the project is implemented successfully in full compliance with the USAID and GOK objectives, rules and regulations; 
  • Provide oversight and leadership to project technical staff in the area of Mapping and Coordination, Sustainable livelihoods through WASH interventions, Sustainable Service Access, Natural Resource Management, Governance and Enabling Environments, Gender and Cross Cutting Issues, and Environmental Compliance; 
  • Ensure synchrony and collaboration between technical staff from the various partner organizations and work with them to bring ideas, findings, and lessons learned to project leadership and the donor agency; 
  • Prepare timely annual work plans and reports for the donor; 
  • Supervise, mentor, manage and motivate staff for optimal performance of the project; 
  • Co-ordinate and collaborate with partners and key stakeholders; 
  • Document and disseminate project achievements and lessons on a timely basis;

Skills And Qualifications
  • The successful candidate will have “not-for-profit” experience, and/or development partner experience. 
  • The ideal candidate will have experience developing, managing and implementing projects, including partnering with like-minded organizations on the definition of objectives and deliverables and monitoring and evaluation of results. 
  • S/he will have a strong record of progressive responsibility and a demonstrated record of service.
  • Advanced degree relevant to the sector is required; 
  • A minimum of 10 years progressively responsible experience, with at least 5 years in leadership positions developing and managing policy and advocacy organizations, programs or initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing complex multi-stakeholder programs funded by development partners essential, USAID preferred; 
  • East African experience in the field and working with governments and multilateral organizations, private sector and civil society; 
  • Strong people management skills with experience in complex organizations and managing teams focused on a broad range of strategic initiatives and programs and demonstrated ability to build strong partnerships inside and outside of the organization; 
  • Demonstrated ability to set goals, develop budgets, measure results and develop and motivate new leaders; 
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills, in positions requiring communication with a broad and diverse audience;
