The Kenya Petroleum Refineries Ltd operates Kenya’s only Petroleum refinery, situated ¡n Mombasa. It ¡s a private limited company whose main business is to convert crude oil into various petroleum products supplied to the country and region.

The company is looking for suitable candidates to fill the following immediate vacancies at its Changamwe plant:

Corrosion Engineer

Brief Description:

The position holder shall report to Manager Inspection and Integrity who reports to the Engineering Manager.

The main responsibilities (among others) are:
  • Responsible and Focal point for Risk Based Inspection(RBI) programs and Risk and Reliability Maintenance for Tanks (T-RRM) programs.
  • Champion the studies and implementations of Risk-based Inspection for plant equipment and RRM for storage facilities
  • Responsible and Focal point for Materials Selection and Degradation
  • Develop and apply corrosion and degradation management strategy
  • Carry out materials failure analysis.
  • Relate failure modes to specific maintenance practices, manufacturing, welding, and/or operating conditions/history and advise user departments.
  • Responsible and Focal point for Integrity Operating Window(IOW) and Root Cause Analysis(RCA).
  • Ensure daily plant operations are in line with IOW requirements.
  • Implement/enforce proactive Integrity management controls.
  • Consolidate reports related to plant operational integrity for purpose of IOW or other forum
  • Integrity advisory in monthly IOW meetings .
  • Lead in RCA investigations of failure incidences and Defect Elimination programs.
The key tasks (among others) are:
  • Provide specialist advice on all matters pertaining to materials degradation and/or corrosion matters in the refinery; a technical backup, support and source of reference to the whole refinery on all materials selection and corrosion problems.
  • Establish a system of monitoring the critical process operating parameters and advise on optimal operating conditions to ensure corrosion/degradation control within these plants.
  • Conduct failure analysis to investigate corrosion or mechanical failures of plant equipment in order to establish and eliminate the root causes of these failures.
  • Conduct or facilitate studies to address materials/corrosion related problems/issues when required, such studies include RBI studies.
  • Liaise and network with specialists in consultant agencies and other operating companies in the field of Materials and Corrosion Engineering.
  • Initiate and co-ordinate on-stream corrosion control/monitoring programmes for all manufacturing plants in the refinery.
  • Provide material and corrosion engineering input (including legislation and inspection requirements) to new projects and revamps/plant changes.
  • Provide training in the field of materials and corrosion to staff Engineering, Operations and Technology departments.
  • Seek and promote best corrosion/ inspection/asset integrity practices that will lead to enhanced delivery of the Best-in-Class targets
  • Work closely with the shutdown teams in following best practices in turnaround maintenance. Review inspectors turn around work scopes and optimize said work scopes during the Scope Challenge Workshops in order to help ensure the best overall refinery plant utilization
  • Provide advice in developing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure/trend activities relating to site integrity performance
  • Provide advice in selection and proper execution of alternative inspection and non-destructive test methods and techniques to improve plant/equipment integrity and reliability
  • Help review and approve the inspection schedules for static equipment and piping (both shutdown and on-stream) related to identified corrosion failure mode
Job Requirements:
  • Possess a bachelor's degree (from a recognized university) or tertiary/professional qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy or Materials Science/Corrosion engineering
  • Minimum 8 years experience in hands-on inspection/ corrosion engineering in process plants
  • Candidates with Masters degree in metallurgy and 3 years post qualification experience will have added advantage
  • Must have a comprehensive knowledge of the various refining processes
  • Candidate should have sound knowledge of developments in NDT inspection technics
  • Must be a self starter and be able to work effectively in teams with multidisciplinary representation, and well developed communication skills
  • Must have practical knowledge in applied Risk Based Inspection methodologies, failure analysis, fitness for purpose analysis, and working with Inspection Data Management Systems
  • Must have comprehensive knowledge of failure analysis methodologies and report writing
  • Sound and applied knowledge of HSE management processes
