Kenya Youth Empowerment Project

Call for Youth to participate in Cycle 2 of the Private Sector Based Training and Internship Program

For Placement in Nairobi and Mombasa Only

The Kenya Youth Empowerment Project (KYEP) is a four year pilot project financed by the Government of Kenya (GoK) with a credit from the World Bank. KYEP is coordinated by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MOYAS), and comprises two components: Capacity building within the MOYAS and providing training and internships in the private sector.

The GoK has appointed the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) to implement the Component of  Private Sector Training and Internship.

The Training and Internship component aims at benefiting approximately 11,000 youth over the four year period. The project is divided into eight cycles and the first cycle which was implemented in Nairobi only has been completed.

The second cycle will be implemented in Nairobi and Mombasa Counties.

This means that irrespective of where they apply from, successful candidates will be place in Nairobi and Mombasa ONLY for the entire internship.

For Nairobi, 1,350 youth will be selected while in Mombasa 600 youth will be selected through automated random selection from the pool of eligible applicants.

Applicants not selected randomly to participate in the internship program may reapply in a later cycle.

Selected youth will undergo two weeks of Life Skills training.

Thereafter, a competitive selection process for internship opportunities will be conducted by employers through interviews for all those who will have completed Life Skills training. (For this cycle only, two random selections will be done in Nairobi; the first one to select 1050 youth and a second one to select 300 youth.

The 300 youth will benefit from the two weeks Life Skills Training ONLY and not proceed to the next level of interviews by employers).

From the interviews, only 900 in Nairobi and 400 in Mombasa out of the 1050 and 600 respectively will qualify to proceed with the rest of the 6 months internship program.

The successful interns will receive a stipend of Ksh 6,000 per month as a contribution towards their transport costs and meals.

However, interns will receive this monthly stipend only on the basis of their full attendance of the internship program.

During the internship program, interns will be placed in one of the following sectors which are considered to be the growth sectors in Vision 2030: Energy; Finance; Tourism; ICT; Manufacturing and Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs).

Half of the entire internship period will be spent in training while the other half will be spent at the workplace.

KEPSA now invites applications from youth who wish to participate in the second cycle of the KYEP Training and Internship Program.
