Proposal Summary:  In October 2012, MSI was awarded the Kenya Program Support Project. Under Support, MSI provides verification, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting for USAID/Kenya’s entire portfolio of projects country-wide.  MSI will also gather information related to the media to assist USAID in assessing and evaluate its interventions in Kenya.

MSI has been implementing a pilot program created to work with six vernacular radio stations in Kenya, to train their journalists (and editors) on development reporting.

Position Summary: MSI is seeking to hire two translators; one who is fluent in Dholuo and the second in the Somali language.  The Translators will translate text messages received from the vernacular radio stations to English.  The assignment duration is a between 3 to 14 days.

Responsibilities: Translation of text messages received from the radio stations from vernacular to English in written form

Qualifications:
  • 8 years experience in translation using Dholuo and Somali grammar and vocabulary and be familiar with the idiomatic and stylistic variants of expressing things in the language.
  • Must be familiar with not only formal or literary expressions in Dholuo and Somali but also jargon, slang, euphemisms, sayings, etc.
  • Ability to translate volumes of short messages ranging in content and context from diverse writers.
  • Experience in the Nyanza and/or the North Eastern Regions of Kenya.
  • A Diploma in Communications, Teaching, or related field.
  • Proficiency in English, Kiswahili.  Dholuo and/or Somali languages are mandatory.
