We are seeking to recruit highly motivated, results-oriented and proactive team players to fill the following positions:

1. Area Coordinator – Karamoja Cluster

Based in Lodwar

Reporting to the Team Leader based in Nairobi, the successful candidate will head up Practical Action’s Karamoja Cluster and ensure effective leadership, management, continuous development and implementation of programme activities in the Cluster.

Key Responsibilities
 
  • Provide leadership and direction to Practical Action programmes within the cluster; oversee programme planning, management and delivery; management of resources, effective liaison and communication
  • Take lead in ensuring that programme outputs (i.e. reports, case studies, lessons, etc.) achieve organizational standards while fulfilling donor requirements
  • Develop and maintain links with local governance structures, partners and target community
  • Actively partake of policy advocacy and networking at local, national and regional levels
  • Ensure timely and accurate development of operational budgets; monitor and manage individual project expenditure to ensure cost effectiveness and compliance with budgetary requirements
  • Effectively document and share programme outputs and learning
  • Manage the organization’s resources and assets within the cluster
  • Mentor, motivate and line manage programme staff so as to achieve high levels of performance
  • Develop, maintain and promote Practical Action’s image within the cluster.
Qualifications, skills and competencies
  • Bachelor’s degree in Rural Development, Natural Resources, Livestock or related discipline
  • Post graduate diploma in project management, community development or related field
  • Minimum five years working experience in development work or relevant field of which two must be at management level
  • Proven experience in project/programme identification and design
  • Proven financial and personnel management skills
  • Excellent advocacy, networking and fundraising skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A critical thinker with excellent analytical skills (research and writing).
2. Project Officer - Water & Sanitation – Karamoja Cluster

Based in Lodwar

Reporting to the Area Coordinator based in Lodwar, the successful candidate will be in charge of implementing a newly funded EC programme for Turkana covering water and sanitation and will work closely with counterparts from co-implementing agencies.

S/he will also be responsible for developing Practical Action’s WASH portfolio in the cluster.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and manage the implementation of WASH programme within the cluster in compliance with donor requirements
  • Champion the development of water and sanitation programme within the cluster in line with Practical Action’s strategy
  • Take lead in developing and ensuring adherence to activity plans and other operational tools; and monitoring
  • Responsible for effective delivery of project activities to time and budget
  • Responsible for the production of time project reports (ensuring quality)
  • Develop and manage partnerships within the water subsector in Karamoja
  • Ensure effective representation of Practical Action in relevant forums and boards within the cluster
  • Take lead in project learning and documentation
  • Develop concept notes based on project learning for further programme development.
Qualifications, skills and competencies
  • Bachelor’s degree in Water and Environmental Engineering/Science or related development discipline
  • Post graduate diploma in Project Management, Community Development or related field
  • Minimum three years working experience in development work
  • Good understanding of policy context and ability to think critically
  • Good interpersonal and public relation skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to customize water and sanitation facilities to community needs
  • Excellent analytical skills (research and writing).
3. Project Officer - Hygiene Promotion – Karamoja Cluster

Based in Lodwar

Working closely with the Water and Sanitation Officer the successful candidate will be in charge of hygiene promotion within the target community under the new project in Turkana.

S/he will also work in close collaboration with other partners within the WASH programme.

Key Responsibilities
  • Directly responsible for hygiene promotion activities within the project
  • Training of beneficiaries on hygiene and sanitation
  • Participate in community mobilization
  • Frontline delivery of project activities
  • Development and adherence to activity plans
  • Participate in timely and quality project reporting and periodic reviews.
Qualifications, skills and competencies
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Water/Sanitation or related development discipline
  • Diploma in Water/Sanitation and/or Project Management
  • Minimum three years working experience in rural setting
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills
  • Excellent analytical skills (research and writing).
4. Project Assistant - Community Mobilization – Karamoja Cluster

Based in Lodwar

Working closely with the Water and Sanitation Officer the successful candidate will take lead in community mobilization within the project area and also actively participate in the training of water user groups. S/he will also work in close collaboration with other partners within the WASH programme.

Key Responsibilities
  • Take lead in community mobilization for active local participation in and support for project activities
  • Work closely with various grassroots committees in the water subsector and strengthen their capacity to participate in various water activities
  • Promote strong local ownership of project activities
  • Mobilize community contributions to project work
  • Actively participate in various grassroots forums to help strengthen links between project work and other actors including target beneficiaries.
Qualifications, skills and competencies
  • Diploma in Development Studies or other relevant field (Water/Sociology/Rural Development)
  • Two years relevant working experience
  • Excellent mobilization and networking skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
