Kenya Primary Math and Reading (PRIMR) Initiative

RTI is recruiting candidates for the Primary Math and Reading (PRIMR) initiative in Kenya.

RTI is recruiting for the following two positions which will be both long term assignments in Kenya, based in Nairobi. Local candidates are preferred.

1. Deputy Chief of Party

The position will have heavy administrative responsibilities, so we are looking for an extremely organized manager of personnel with knowledge of the education sector in Kenya.

Position Summary:

This person will manage all administrative and reporting activities for the project, under the direction of the Chief of Party.

He/she will ensure that required reports and documentation are produced according to USAID’s guidelines. Candidate should possess strong management, administrative and writing skills. Serves as RTI’s alternate liaison to USAID, government counterparts, local organizations, and program partners when COP is unavailable.

The DCOP will supervise meeting and workshop preparation, oversee deliverable timing, ensure that timelines are followed, and work with the team in technical design of the initiative.

Qualifications:
  • 15 years of experience with at least a Master’s degree;
  • Commensurate experience working in education;
  • experience in implementing USAID projects required;
  • experience in supervising staff and implementing interventions required;
  • experience ensuring the timely and high quality production of deliverables, including quarterly progress reports, annual reports, financial reports, etc. ;
  • support the COP in program management activities, specifically workshops, meetings, training delivery, material production and delivery;
  • full proficiency in Excel, Word, and other MS Office software;
  • strong oral/written communication skills;
  • strong planning, organization and problem solving skills; and
  • strong presentation and facilitation skills.
2. Education Research Assistant

The position will have unique research, training and supervisory responsibilities, so we are looking for someone with knowledge of the formal education sector, experience in slums in Kenya, and experience with training.

Position Summary:

The PRIMR project seeks to improve the quality of early grade instruction in formal and non-formal schools through a reading and maths intervention.

The Education Research Assistant will provide support to the Education Specialist in all technical activities such as materials development, organization of technical workshops and training of data collectors, coaches, and teachers.

These include working with RTI technical staff to help implement instructional approaches to be used in the PRIMR project.

The Research Assistant will also provide support for TAC tutors and instructional coaches working to implement revised lesson plans as well as assist with activities related to conducting research studies.

The assignment is both technical and managerial.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Education and five(5) years of experience working in education sector;
  • experience with data collection and research studies, especially reading and math related;
  • experience supervising and training data collectors;
  • knowledge of Kiswahili and English instruction in Kenya;
  • experience working in urban slum areas; and
  • fluency in English and Kiswahili required.
