Lutheran World Relief (LWR) is US non-governmental organization headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, that works with partners worldwide to reduce poverty and injustice by helping communities increase and expand the resources they need to live productive, healthy and empowered lives.
 
LWR, with a regional office in Nairobi, Kenya and Country Offices in Uganda and Tanzania, currently seeks to recruit for the following positions for its new Watershed Approach to Enhancing Resilience Project in partnership with Neema, Makindu River Irrigation Farm, Ndukangeuke Self Help Groups and Kiboko Water Resource Users Association in Makindu district.
 
Project Coordinator

Based in Makindu
 
Purpose:
 
“The Project Coordinator’s core function is to coordinate the implementation and management of the Watershed Approach to Enhancing Resilience Project, to accompany the partners, in developing appropriate institutional and organizational frameworks to ensure active participation by project and community members, and to promote transparency and accountability in the use of project resources.”
 
The role of the Project Coordinator is to ensure that the project is implemented in accordance with contractual obligations and meets the highest standard of implementation. 

This position directly supervises four project staff, and provides technical supervision for three partner staff.
 
The Project Coordinator also coordinates and establishes and maintains a working structure to manage the partnerships and the inputs of the various stakeholders into the project implementation including the Ministries of Agriculture, Cooperatives, Livestock, Water and Irrigation and Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA).

Key Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Community development, Agriculture/Agribusiness/Agricultural economics or Natural Resource Management or other relevant discipline. Advanced degree is a plus. 
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the design, management, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of community and economic development and/or disaster recovery projects. 
  • Previous experience implementing cash-for-work activities a plus. 
  • At least 3 years partnership management experience. 
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills. 
  • Highly pro-active and ability to perform with minimum supervision.
Project Accountant

Based in Makindu.
 
Purpose:
 
The Project Accountant performs all bookkeeping, budgeting, financial analysis and reporting related to project administration and provides technical support to the partners’ financial operations, reporting and management.

Key Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce- Accounting or Certified Public Accountant part II
  • Knowledge and experience on the use of quick books accounting software. 
  • Three years minimum experience in donor/NGO project accounting; experience in accounting for external donor-funded projects an advantage. 
  • Experience of field accounting processes with NGOs and CBOs and implementing cash for work procedures a plus.
Project Officer - Organizational Development Officer

Based in Makindu.
 
Purpose:
 
The Organizational Capacity Building Officer is responsible for carrying out all activities designed to strengthen partners’ capacities to manage their organizations and provide quality services to their members, focusing on the specific aspects of the project. 

The Organizational Capacity Building Officer will work with the partners to develop and implement capacity strengthening plans that allow them to manage themselves in a transparent and democratic manner

Key Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in community development, organizational development, business administration, or other relevant discipline.
  • Advanced degree a plus. At least 3 years’ experience in the design, management, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of community development projects.
  • Experience designing and implementing governance documents (constitutions, by-laws) and organizational policies and procedures, relevant to community-based organizations. 
  • Demonstrated experience in training and coaching.
Project Officer - Natural Resources Management

Based in Makindu.
 
Purpose:
 
The Natural Resource Management Officer’s core function is to coordinate the implementation of all the environmental conservation aspects of the project that include supporting the construction of water structures, soil and water conservation, catchment rehabilitation and protection measures and tree planting.
 
Key Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resource management, engineering, hydrology, environmental studies, agriculture, forestry or other relevant discipline, or equivalent experience. 
  • At least 3 years’ experience in the implementation of watershed management, conservation or environmental protection and mitigation activities.
All candidates should demonstrate excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, strong organizational, facilitation and participatory planning skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English and Kiswahili, proficiency in computer and internet skills (MS Word, Excel, Explorer) and a deep commitment to LWR’s core values and ability to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners.
