Role Purpose: 

Psycho-social support is one of the core competencies of Save the Children Denmark within the field of Child Protection. 

To strengthen Child/Youth Resilience programming in East Africa through fund-raising, strategic support and coordination, capacity building and surge capacity for implementation and emergencies Save the Children Denmark seeks to recruit a Regional Child/Youth Resilience Advisor.

This deployment plays a vital part in enhancing the regional capacity of Save the Children in the region and to strengthen Save the Children International’s coordination and networking mechanisms, for the Global Initiative on Child Protection (CPI).

Scope of Role: 

Reports to
a) Head of Section Child Protection and Child Survival; Save the Children Denmark 
b) Regional Directorate – East Africa Budget  

Responsibilities: Budget associated with the functions of the position. Regional Dimensions: Roaming, regional position with extensive travel

Key Areas of Accountability: 
  • The regional Child/Youth Resilience Advisor will work towards outcomes on four levels:
  • Child and youth resilience. Ensuring that programmes in country have sufficient resources and expertise at hand to build capacity, to monitor, to ensure quality and to develop further in their ability to meet the psycho-social needs of children and adolescents. The advisor should also trigger advocacy efforts related to the resilience programmes and drive learning and innovations in liaison with other key stakeholders.
  • Regional programme support. The regional advisor will work closely with the Child Protection Initiative and regional programmes to integrate Save the Children Denmark tools and lessons learnt on psychosocial support, youth and child empowerment and sexual violence into programming in humanitarian and development strategic and tactical planning.
  • Fundraising. Identification of funding possibilities for psycho-social support, specifically child resilience and action against sexual violence, and with the active participation in policy-building on regional and local level.
  • Child Protection In Emergencies - deployments. The regional advisor will be available for Child Protection in Emergencies deployments and undertake deployments for Save the Children International for up to 3 months per emergency.
Skills and Behaviours Accountability: 
  • The position is professionally ultimately accountable towards the children.
  • Collaboration:The position requires a high degree of self-motivation, while demanding the capacity to coordinate with a series of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Creativity & Innovation: The field of psycho-social support to children is often suspected to be a rather “soft”, un-measurable discipline. Save the Children Denmark is spearheading Monitoring & Evaluation systems, including quantifiable and verifiable indicators of outcome and impact. The position is expected to contribute to this endeavour.
  • Integrity: Firm knowledge of Child Safeguarding and Protection standards and high professional and moral integrity are indispensible.
  • Mobility: The position requires extensive travel in the region in emergency and non-emergency contexts (50% of working time).
Qualifications and Experience
  • University degree in Humanitarian Affairs, Human Rights, Human Geography, Project Management, International Relations, Disaster Risk Reduction/Disaster Management, Social Work, Psychology or related field.
  • Demonstrated active planning and responding role in Child Protection in several humanitarian settings.
  • Solid experience in psycho-social programming in emergencies and non-emergencies a strong asset.
  • Working knowledge with NGOs, especially Save the Children, highly desirable.
  • Experience in conducting training and capacity building highly desirable.
  • Fundraising and reporting experience with bilateral and multi-lateral donors. Knowledge of ECHO application and reporting procedures an asset.
  • Proven output-oriented networking capacity a requirement.
  • High level of computer literacy a must.
  • Knowledge of East Africa an asset.
  • A sense of humour even in stressful situations wouldn’t do any harm.
  • Commitment to Save the Children values.
