Kenyatta University Teaching, Research & Referral Hospital

Kenyatta University intends to build a 600-bed capacity state of the art University Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital. It will be a fully fledged University Hospital.

The construction project will take three (3) years and covers the construction of the Hospital and Medical School. It will have an Oncology and Geriatric Units and a Dental school.

We therefore wish to employ highly qualified persons who will form a team of inhouse experts to help supervise the development of physical infrastructure.

1. Project Manager

The applicants must be holders of a Degree in Building Economics / Quantity Surveying / Construction Management / Architecture or Civil Engineering.

In addition the applicants must have:
  • Evidence of registration to relevant professional bodies and three (3) years post-registration experience in a project management capacity including a multi-billion project, and all aspects of project process, development and execution.
  • Computer literacy and strong familiarity with project management software, such as Microsoft project, Primavera and reporting Software programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in Personnel Management.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Post-graduate qualification will be added advantage.
The project manager will be employed within a design-and build contract arrangement for the proposed Referral and Teaching Hospital for Kenyatta University.

He/she will be deployed as the Principal Site-based Representative of the Project Implementation Committee which is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor.

In addition, the applicant will be required:
  • To track and report on the planning of the implementation plan for the hospital by the contractor.
  • To establish and run the Site-based Project Management Office.
  • Develop and implement project communication and reporting strategy and plans including communication formats and templates.
  • Effectively and constantly communicate project expectations to the Contractor.
  • Brief the Vice-Chancellor on all matters relating to the Project on a frequent and regular basis.
  • Plan, schedule and promote project timelines and milestones to the Contractor using appropriate tools.
  • Develop and deliver progress reports, proposals, requirements documentation and presentations.
2. Quantity Surveyor

Applicants must be holders of a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Building Economics or Quantity Surveying from a recognized institution.

In addition the applicant must:
  • Be registered with the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors of Kenya and be a member of a recognized professional body.
  • Have a minimum of three (3) years post registration working experience in a consultancy firm or a large construction firm.
The duties of the applicant will include among other things:
  • The preparation of Bills of Quantities and schedules of materials, labour and services required in the construction and equipment.
  • The preparation and valuation of works and preparation of progress reports.
3. Biomedical Engineer

The applicants must be holders of a Degree in Medical Engineering or Higher National Diploma in the related field from a recognized institution.

In addition the applicant must:
  • Have at least five (5) years working experience heading a maintenance function in a busy institution or hospital.
  • Be registered with the relevant professional board.
  • Have a proven track record in Energy Management, Maintenance Management and Operational Costs Control.
The work will be carried out in different stages from design stage through the commissioning of the project.

The duties of applicants will include the following:-
  • To be in-charge of verifying that the following processes are well specified: work, process, patients, staff and equipments flow and area sizing.
  • Identification of the necessary supplies to the units.
  • Ensuring technical specification for all the equipments are developed as the client’s needs.
  • To assist in the tendering, sourcing and delivery verification and inspection of equipments.
  • Installation, testing and commissioning.
  • To be responsible for medical gases and biomedical incineration, distribution and design requirements.
4. Civil / Structural Engineer

Applicants must be holders of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.

In addition the applicant must:
  • Be a registered engineer with Engineers Registration Board of Kenya or a member of a recognized professional body.
  • Have at least three (3) years post registration work experience in the construction industry.
The duties of the applicant will include:
  • Design and production of Structural and Civil working drawings for projects.
  • Supervision of Projects from inception to completion.
  • Submission of Structural drawings to relevant authorities.
5. Mechanical Engineer (Building Services)

Applicants must be holders of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Building Services) or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution.

In addition the applicant must:
  • Be registered with a relevant professional body.
  • Have at least three (3) years post registration work experience in a consulting or construction firm.
The duties of the applicant will include:
  • Preparation and valuation of Mechanical work and prepare progress reports.
  • Design and production of Mechanical work drawings and bills of quantities for projects.
  • Supervision of projects from inception to completion.
6. Architect

Applicants must be holders of a Degree in Architecture from a recognized University.

They should also have at least three (3) years post registration practical experience with a reputable organization or Government.

The applicant will be required to carry out the following duties:
  • To prepare designs and produce drawings of building projects in the University constructions programmes as well as, undertake supervision of these projects during construction.
  • To supervise projects from inception to completion.
  • To submit drawings to relevant authorities.
The applicants should be registered by the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors of Kenya and be a member of a recognized professional body.

Terms of Service:

The terms of service for the above posts include a renewable contract of two (2) years which is subject to satisfactory work performance, a generous medical scheme, a house allowance and a commuting allowance. Gratuity will be given at the end of the contract.
