Background: Green Empowerment is a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Portland, Oregon, USA that works with local partners around the world to strengthen communities with renewable energy and safe water.
 
Green Empowerment (GE) is helping to develop a partnership in Kenya to pilot the use of solar micro-grids to expand energy access in rural communities. 

We are working closely with a local NGO, MANDO, to develop complementary community development projects that take advantage of energy access, as well as monitor and evaluate the impact of the initiative. 

Concurrently, we are developing longer-term partnerships in Kenya with the mission of implementing other renewable energy and water projects. 

We are seeking a flexible, ambitious and diligent program coordinator to assist with the implementation and expansion of these activities.

Description of tasks
 
Task 1: Coordinate the community development projects associated with GE’s solar micro-grid initiative in 6 communities
  • Assist the Kenya Program Manager in developing and implementing the activities of all projects.
  • Develop detailed project proposals and seek grant funding and lending partners necessary for complete implementation of the identified community development actions.
  • Assist in carrying out a monitoring and evaluation plan for the Solar Micro-Grid Initiative.
  • Document project progress; prepare reports for Green Empowerment, donors, and other stakeholders.
Task 2: Green Empowerment Program Development
  • Develop new joint program ideas with local NGO partners to deliver clean water, expand the use of renewable energy and/or find sustainable solutions to address basic needs and environmental issues in rural Kenya.
  • Identify funding opportunities and prepare project proposals for potential donors/investors.
  • Identify unique and innovative funding models that can sustain and increase GE’s programmatic work in Africa and that could be transferrable to other core countries. Meet regularly with aid agencies and international funders, corporations,foundations, etc.
  • Jointly with GE partners, oversee all aspects of project implementation, including planning, budgeting, community organization, stakeholder engagement, inter-partner coordination, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Build capacity of local partner organizations, as needed, so that they can sustain and replicate programs. Capacity building may take the form of technical, managerial, or financial training, both formal and informal, making linkages with counterparts, jointly developing grant proposals or reports, strategic planning, etc.
  • Potentially organize and run Service Learning Trips of groups or volunteers.
  • Attend meetings, conferences and other networking opportunities on behalf of Green Empowerment.
  • Regularly report program successes, challenges, and opportunities to Green Empowerment and contribute to internal and external publications as requested.
Qualifications:
  • Background in community or rural development, basic services provision (particularly electrification), or related field.
  • Minimum five years of previous experience managing international development programs
  • Demonstrated success at building organizational capacity, training and mentoring others.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to work independently and coordinate a team.
  • Willing and able to travel to rural Kenyan communities.
  • Fluency in English required; Swahili proficiency desirable.
  • Previous experience working in rural Kenya.
Supervision and Coordination: The consultant reports to Green Empowerment’s Kenya Program Manager. 

He/she will also coordinate closely with Green Empowerment Programs Director, MANDO staff, and community leaders.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
